ABSTRACT

Music is well-known to elicit ergogenic effects on exercise performance; however, the moderating role of application timing remains unclear. This study examined the effects of the timing of music on fatigue perception and performance during isometric strength exercises. Using a within-subject, randomised crossover design, twelve recreationally active young adults performed two isometric strength tasks (plank-hold and wall-sit) in three separate conditions (MEE: music played during the entire exercise task; MDF: music played during fatigue alone; CON: no music). The total time to volitional exhaustion (TTE), time to the onset of fatigue perception (TFP), heart rate, and blood lactate responses were assessed during each trial. MEE resulted in a significantly longer TTE than CON in both the plank-hold (p < 0.05, d = 0.76) and wall-sit exercises (p < 0.05, d = 0.72), whereas MDF led to a significantly longer TTE than CON in wall-sit exercises alone (p < 0.05, d = 0.60). TFP was significantly longer in MEE than in CON in both the plank-hold (p < 0.05, d = 0.54) and wall-sit exercises (p < 0.05, d = 0.64). The music condition did not influence the heart rate or blood lactate changes in any of the trials. Our results suggest that listening to music during the entire exercise can delay the onset of fatigue perception in isometric strength tasks, whereas listening to music during fatigue has only a modest effect. Athletes and exercisers should consider extending music exposure throughout the entire exercise task to maximise performance benefits.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that the human capacity to gauge one's own physiological state is notoriously flawed. The cause for the mismatch between perceived and physiological stress has not yet been properly identified. In this study, we assumed that cardioceptive accuracy (CAc) is positively associated with cardiovascular reactivity, and CAc and expectation about stress might account for the discrepancy between perceived and physiological stress. In a crossover experiment, we assessed cardioceptive accuracy in two ways (mental heartbeat tracking task and perception of heart rate), and induced physiological (handgrip exercise) and mental (N-back task) stress in 64 university students (51 % male, mean age 22.2). We assessed cardiac and electrodermal activity, and expected and perceived stress. We found that indicators of cardioceptive accuracy were not associated with cardiovascular reactivity. However, heart rate perception moderated the association between the change in heart rate and perceived stress in the physical but not in the mental task. Whereas heartbeat tracking accuracy was not associated with perceived stress. Moreover, perceived stress was predicted by the expected stress but not by the change in heart rate and electrodermal activity in the mental stress task. In conclusion, heart rate perception and expectation of stress may shape perceived stress more than actual physiological changes in moderate acute stress.

ABSTRACT

Our brains are good at detecting and learning associative structures; according to some linguistic theories, this capacity even constitutes a prerequisite for the development of syntax and compositionality in language and verbalized thought. I will argue that the search for associative motifs in input patterns is an evolutionary old brain function that enables contiguity in sensory perception and orientation in time and space. It has its origins in an elementary material property of cells that is particularly evident at chemical synapses: input-assigned calcium influx that activates calcium sensor proteins involved in memory storage. This machinery for the detection and learning of associative motifs generates knowledge about input relationships and integrates this knowledge into existing networks through updates in connectivity patterns.

ABSTRACT

Hazard perception refers to a driver's ability to identify potential hazards on the road. Although studies have shown that overconfidence affects drivers' ability to perceive hazards, the neural processing of hazard perception in overconfident drivers under different hazard types has rarely been investigated. A mixed experimental design of 2 (hazard type: hazards, no hazards) × 2 (driver group: overconfident driver, control group) was used. A total of 120 images (60 with hazards and 60 without hazards) were presented to 25 overconfident drivers and 25 drivers in the control group. Reaction time, response accuracy, P200 (200-250 ms), and N2 (280-330 ms) components were measured via event-related potential (ERP) technology. Response times of overconfident drivers are slower than those of the control group regardless of hazard types. The P200 latency of overconfident drivers was longer than that of their peers in hazard situations, while the P200 latency was similar between the two groups in no-hazard situations. Although a significant interaction was found on the N2 amplitude, no significant differences were found between the two groups in both hazard and no-hazard situations. Overconfident drivers have worse hazard perception performance in hazard situations with slower reaction times and greater P200 latencies than their peers. More importantly, P200 amplitude and N2 amplitude are sensitive to hazard types, while P200 amplitude and N2 latency can discriminate between driver groups. The findings help understand the negative impact of overconfidence on young drivers and contribute to the development and training of hazard perception tests.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Menthol is known to elicit opposing thermoregulatory and perceptual alterations during intense exercise. The current purpose was to determine the thermoregulatory and perceptual effects of topical menthol application prior to walking in the heat. METHODS: Twelve participants walked (1.6 m s-1, 5% grade) for 30 min in the heat (38 °C, 60% relative humidity) with either a 4% menthol or control gel on the upper (shoulder to wrist) and lower (mid-thigh to ankle) limbs. Skin blood flow (SkBF), sweat (rate, composition), skin conductivity, heart rate, temperature (skin, core), and thermal perception were measured prior to and during exercise. RESULTS: Skin conductivity expressed as time to 10, 20, 30, and 40 µS was delayed due to menthol (559 ± 251, 770 ± 292, 1109 ± 301, 1299 ± 335 s, respectively) compared to the control (515 ± 260, 735 ± 256, 935 ± 300, 1148 ± 298 s, respectively, p = 0.048). Sweat rate relative to body surface area was lower due to menthol (0.55 ± 0.16 L h-1 m(2)-1) than the control (0.64 ± 0.16 L h-1 m(2)-1, p = 0.049). Core temperature did not differ at baseline between the menthol (37.4 ± 0.3 °C) and control (37.3 ± 0.4 °C, p = 0.298) but was higher at 10, 20, and 30 min due to menthol (37.5 ± 0.3, 37.7 ± 0.2, 38.1 ± 0.3 °C, respectively) compared to the control (37.3 ± 0.4, 37.4 ± 0.3, 37.7 ± 0.3 °C, respectively, p < 0.05). The largest rise in core temperature from baseline was at 30 min during menthol (0.7 ± 0.3 °C) compared to the control (0.4 ± 0.2 °C, p = 0.004). Overall, the menthol treatment was perceived cooler, reaching "slightly warm" whereas the control treatment reached "warm" (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Menthol application to the limbs impairs whole-body thermoregulation while walking in the heat despite perceiving the environment as cooler.

ABSTRACT

Background: Muscle dysfunction is an early complication of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). As a convenient and low-cost tool, muscle ultrasound has been used to assess muscle quality and muscle mass. However, the relationship between different muscle ultrasound parameters and DPN is unclear. Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the relationship between ultrasound parameters of different muscles and DPN among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, including the rectus femoris (RF), tibialis anterior (TA), and medial head of gastrocnemius (MG). Materials and Methods: The research enrolled 90 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). All images were attained from both sides. Muscle measurements contained muscle thickness (MT), cross-sectional area (CSA), echo intensity (EI), and corrected EI. The binary logistic regression and multiple linear regression were used to investigate the association between muscle ultrasound parameters and DPN or vibration perception threshold (VPT). Results: EI, corrected EI, MT of MG, and EI of TA were associated with DPN separately after adjusting other clinical variates. Among these muscle parameters, the EI of MG had a better predictive value (OR: 1.114, 95% CI: 1.039, 1.196) of DPN. Combined with CSA of RF, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and sex, the corrected EI of MG was associated with the vibration perception threshold (VPT) (standard ß = 0.242, p < 0.001), better than the EI of MG (standard ß = 0.215, p = 0.002). Conclusions: MG (MT, EI, and corrected EI) and TA (EI) were associated with DPN, respectively. CSA of RF and corrected EI or EI of MG combined with PAD and sex were associated with VPT significantly, which supported that muscle ultrasound might be a substantial quantitative tool for detecting the exercise benefits for DPN.

ABSTRACT

Classical singers' performances vary across different acoustic environments. The changes in the delivery are influenced by the singer's perception of the venue's acoustics. This study investigated these relationships using nine professional or semi-professional classical singers. Participants performed Giordani's "Caro mio ben" aria in five venues, and the acoustic parameters reverberance (T30 and EDT), clarity (C80), early vocal support (STv), and tonal color (EDTf) were measured. From a factor analysis of the subjective analysis three major factors emerged that, we propose, would represent three generalized percepts of Room Supportiveness, Room Noiselessness, and Room Timbre. These percepts correlated significantly with objective acoustic parameters traditionally linked to vocal support, reverberation, and timbre. Room Supportiveness and Room Noiselessness significantly contributed to the singers' likability of the acoustic environment, while Room Timbre did not. This indicates that singers' perceptual preference for a performance space may be influenced by factors affecting both auditory feedback and vocal function. These findings underscore the need for performing space designers to consider the unique needs of all stakeholders, including listeners and performers. The study contributes to the bridging of the gap between subjective perceptions and objective measurements, providing valuable insights for acoustic design considerations.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to examine the characteristics of a clinical test for the assessment of nasal trigeminal sensitivity to mechanical stimuli and its association with the perception of nasal patency. METHODS: Thirty-two normosmic healthy subjects participated (17 women and 15 men; age = 26 ± 3 years). Precisely defined air puffs were used with a flow rate of 2L/min for mechanical stimulation. They were presented to the nasal vestibule, nasal septum, and inferior turbinate with various stimulus durations. Thresholds were measured by single-staircase stimuli with changes in stimulus duration in steps of 10 ms. Trigeminal suprathreshold intensity was rated by subjects for stimulus durations of 200, 300, 400, and 500 ms. Test-retest reliability was examined by intraclass correlations (ICCs) and Bland-Altman plot with limits of agreement. Pearson's correlations were calculated between self-rated nasal patency and nasal trigeminal sensitivity. RESULTS: As indicated by trigeminal threshold and suprathreshold intensities, the nasal vestibule is the most sensitive area among the three locations, followed by the nasal septum and the inferior turbinate (p < 0.001). Coefficients of correlations between test and retest were 0.76 for thresholds, and 0.56 suprathreshold intensities (p < 0.001). The Bland-Altman analysis showed a good agreement between test-retest values. In addition, significant positive associations between trigeminal suprathreshold intensities and self-rated nasal obstruction were found at the inferior turbinate (r = 0.4, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Reliable assessment of nasal trigeminal sensitivity for air puffs appears to be possible. Nasal trigeminal suprathreshold sensitivity to mechanical stimuli is associated with the perception of nasal patency at the inferior turbinate. This opens a window into the assessment of the perception of nasal airflow in various clinical purposes, especially for patients with sinonasal diseases.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of age on the affective responses (attitude, feelings, self-efficacy, intention, enjoyment, and fondness) after a worksite circuit-style resistance exercise routine in career firefighters. METHODS: Nineteen young (25.5 ± 3.3 yr) and 19 middle-aged male career firefighters (50.3 ± 3.5 yr) completed 2 d of physical testing at local fire stations. Participants were familiarized with the resistance training exercises (deadlift, shoulder press, lunge, and upright row) at visit 1 and performed a multirepetition maximum (RM) assessment to prescribe the appropriate loads for the resistance exercise bout on visit 2. The resistance training session included three sets of 8 to 10 repetitions per exercise at 80% 1-RM. Participants completed a postexercise questionnaire examining affective responses and a rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Mann-Whitney U tests and an independent t-test were used to determine differences between the young and middle-aged firefighters' affective responses and RPE, respectively. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between groups for any of the six affective responses ( P = 0.062-0.819) or RPE ( P = 0.142). CONCLUSIONS: Age did not influence the perceived effort or affective responses following an acute bout of worksite resistance exercise. Firefighters reported overall positive attitudes, feelings, and fondness paired with high self-efficacy and intention at a training frequency of twice per week. However, confidence, intention, and enjoyment decreased at higher training frequencies (i.e., 3-4x per week). Circuit-style resistance training performed twice per week may be a feasible and practical worksite exercise routine across ages in the fire service.

ABSTRACT

The aims of this study were to: (i) analyse the within-microcycle variations in professional soccer players; (ii) analyse the relationships between wellness and training and match load demands; (iii) analyse the relationships between match-day (MD) demands and wellness during the following day (MD+1); and (iv) analyse the relationships between MD and wellness during the day before match-play (MD-1). Thirteen professional soccer players (age: 24.85±3.13 years) were monitored daily over 16-weeks for wellness and training and match-play intensity. The daily wellness measures included fatigue, quality of sleep, muscle soreness, mood and stress using a 1-5 scale. Internal intensity was subjectively measured daily using the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and the multiplication of RPE by session duration (s-RPE). While external intensity was quantified utilising high-speed running, sprinting, and acceleration and deceleration metrics. Data was analysed from each training session before (i.e., MD-5) or after the match (i.e., MD+1). Repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman ANOVA was used to analyse the aims (i) where Spearman correlation was applied to analyse the relationships between the aims (ii) and (iii) between sleep quality and training intensity. The main results for aim (i) showed that MD+1 presented the lowest values for wellness variables (p < 0.05). While MD-1 presented the lowest internal and external load values (for all variables), with MD presenting the highest values (p < 0.05). Regarding aim (ii), the main result showed significant large negative correlations between fatigue and s-RPE (r = -0.593; p = 0.033). Considering aim (iii), significant small to very large negative correlations were found for sleep quality, fatigue and muscle soreness with all internal and external variables (p < 0.05). Lastly, the main results for aim (iv) showed large negative correlations for fatigue and session duration; fatigue and s-RPE; muscle soreness and session duration; muscle soreness and s-RPE; and muscle soreness and decelerations (p < 0.05, for all). The main conclusions were that MD had an influence on wellness and internal and external training intensity, notably MD-1 and MD+1 were most affected. In this regard, a tendency of higher internal and external intensity on MD was associated with lower wellness measures of sleep quality, muscle soreness and fatigue on MD+1.

ABSTRACT

This is a two-part study to determine one or more reliable physiological anchors for perception of effort. The purpose of Study 1 was to compare ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) at the ventilatory threshold (VT) in running, cycling, and upper body exercise with the premise that if RPE at VT did not differ across exercise modes, VT might provide a unique set of physiological inputs for perception of effort. For 27 participants, values for VT and for RPE at VT (Borg 6 to 20 scale) averaged 9.4 km⋅h-1 (SD = 0.7) and 11.9 km⋅h-1 (SD = 1.4) respectively in running, 135 W (SD = 24) and 12.1 W (SD = 1.6) in cycling, and 46 W (SD = 5) and 12.0 W (SD = 1.7) in upper body exercise. RPE did not differ, suggesting that VT may anchor effort perception. In Study 2, 10 participants performed cycle ergometer exercise for 30 minutes at their VT (M = 101 W, SD = 21), at their maximal lactate steady state (M = 143 W, SD = 22), and at their critical power (CP; M = 167 W, SD = 23). Mean end-exercise RPE were 12.1 (SD = 2.1), 15.0 (SD = 1.9), and 19.0 (SD = 0.5), respectively. The very close clustering of RPE during exercise at CP hints that the confluence of physiological responses at CP may (also) serve as a determinant in perception of effort.

INTRODUCTION: The sensation of breathlessness is often attributed to perturbations in cardio-pulmonary physiology, leading to changes in afferent signals. New evidence suggests that these signals are interpreted in the light of prior "expectations". A misalignment between afferent signals and expectations may underly unexplained breathlessness. Using a novel immersive virtual reality (VR) exercise paradigm, we investigated whether manipulating an individual's expectation of effort (determined by a virtual hill gradient) may alter their perception of breathlessness, independent from actual effort (the physical effort of cycling). METHODS: Nineteen healthy volunteers completed a single experimental session where they exercised on a cycle ergometer while wearing a VR headset. We created an immersive virtual cycle ride where participants climbed up 100 m hills with virtual gradients of 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12%. Each virtual hill gradient was completed twice: once with a 4% cycling ergometer resistance and once with a 6% resistance, allowing us to dissociate expected effort (virtual hill gradient) from actual effort (power). At the end of each hill, participants reported their perceived breathlessness. Linear mixed effects models were used to examine the independent contribution of actual effort and expected effort to ratings of breathlessness (0-10 scale). RESULTS: Expectation of effort (effect estimate ± std. error, 0.63 ± 0.11, P < 0.001) and actual effort (0.81 ± 0.21, P < 0.001) independently explained subjective ratings of breathlessness, with comparable contributions of 19% and 18%, respectively. Additionally, we found that effort expectation accounted for 6% of participants' power and was a significant, independent predictor (0.09 ± 0.03; P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: An individuals' expectation of effort is equally important for forming perceptions of breathlessness as the actual effort required to cycle. A new VR paradigm enables this to be experimentally studied and could be used to re-align breathlessness and enhance training programmes.

ABSTRACT

Temperature sensitive receptors in the skin and deep body enable the detection of the external and internal environment, including the perception of thermal stimuli. Changes in heat balance require autonomic (e.g., sweating) and behavioral (e.g., seeking shade) thermoeffector initiation to maintain thermal homeostasis. Sex differences in body morphology can largely, but not entirely, account for divergent responses in thermoeffector and perceptual responses to environmental stress between men and women. Thus, it has been suggested that innate differences in thermosensation may exist between men and women. Our goal in this review is to summarize the existing literature that investigates localized and whole-body cold and heat exposure pertaining to sex differences in thermal sensitivity and perception, and the interplay between autonomic and behavioral thermoeffector responses. Overall, it appears that local differences in thermal sensitivity and perception are minimized, yet still apparent, when morphological characteristics are well-controlled. Sex differences in the early vasomotor response to environmental stress and subsequent changes in blood flow likely contribute to the heightened thermal awareness observed in women. However, the contribution of thermoreceptors to observed sex differences in thermal perception and thermoeffector function is unclear, as human studies investigating these questions have not been performed.

ABSTRACT

Implementing heating and cooling set-point temperature modulations in buildings can promote energy savings and boost energy flexibility. However, time and time-of-day requirements in current indoor climate regulations are either overly simplified or ignored completely. A better understanding of how human thermal responses vary throughout the day is useful to effectively design and operate energy-flexible buildings. To date, only a handful of studies have looked at diurnal changes in thermal perception and mostly near steady-state neutrality without controlling for light exposure. This is the first experimental investigation aimed at understanding how the time of the day influences physiological and subjective human sensory responses to a localized dynamic thermal stimulus under constant light rich in long wavelengths (red). Results indicated that humans responded physiologically differently depending on the time of the day with a higher rate of change in the skin temperature in the evening compared with the afternoon. Furthermore, the increase of thermal sensation during the warming skin temperature transients was found to be greater in the evening. No differences were observed under steady-state thermal conditions. This evidence suggests that accounting for the time of the day is important when dynamically operating buildings, such as during demand-response programs.

J Strength Cond Res 37(2): 277-283, 2023-This study tested the acute psychological effects of resistance exercise in men with symptoms of muscle dysmorphia. Twenty-one men completed 4 on-site sessions including a single session of moderate- (70% of 10 repetition maximum [RM]) and high- (100% of 10RM) intensity resistance exercise in a counter balanced order separated by at least 48 hours. State body image, perceived muscle size, exercise enjoyment, and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were assessed before, during, and after each session, and statistical significance was set a priori at p < 0.05. State body image significantly improve from pre to post during both sessions ( p < 0.01), with greater effect sizes seen for the high- ( d = 0.57) compared with the moderate- ( d = 0.39) intensity session. Perceived muscle size improved from pre to post during the high-intensity only ( p < 0.01, d = 0.66), and subjects enjoyed the high-intensity session significantly more than the moderate-intensity session ( p = 0.01), despite significantly higher RPE at each timepoint ( p < 0.01). Results contend with previous findings that show more positive psychological effects of moderate- compared with high-intensity resistance exercise. Education and client observation are essential to be aware of the potential for muscle dysmorphia. In instances where muscle dysmorphia is suspected, referral to qualified mental health professionals is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Fatigue has been defined differently in the literature depending on the field of research. The inconsistent use of the term fatigue complicated scientific communication, thereby limiting progress towards a more in-depth understanding of the phenomenon. Therefore, Enoka and Duchateau (Med Sci Sports Exerc 48:2228-38, 2016, [3]) proposed a fatigue framework that distinguishes between trait fatigue (i.e., fatigue experienced by an individual over a longer period of time) and motor or cognitive task-induced state fatigue (i.e., self-reported disabling symptom derived from the two interdependent attributes performance fatigability and perceived fatigability). Thereby, performance fatigability describes a decrease in an objective performance measure, while perceived fatigability refers to the sensations that regulate the integrity of the performer. Although this framework served as a good starting point to unravel the psychophysiology of fatigue, several important aspects were not included and the interdependence of the mechanisms driving performance fatigability and perceived fatigability were not comprehensively discussed. Therefore, the present narrative review aimed to (1) update the fatigue framework suggested by Enoka and Duchateau (Med Sci Sports Exerc 48:2228-38, 2016, [3]) pertaining the taxonomy (i.e., cognitive performance fatigue and perceived cognitive fatigue were added) and important determinants that were not considered previously (e.g., effort perception, affective valence, self-regulation), (2) discuss the mechanisms underlying performance fatigue and perceived fatigue in response to motor and cognitive tasks as well as their interdependence, and (3) provide recommendations for future research on these interactions. We propose to define motor or cognitive task-induced state fatigue as a psychophysiological condition characterized by a decrease in motor or cognitive performance (i.e., motor or cognitive performance fatigue, respectively) and/or an increased perception of fatigue (i.e., perceived motor or cognitive fatigue). These dimensions are interdependent, hinge on different determinants, and depend on body homeostasis (e.g., wakefulness, core temperature) as well as several modulating factors (e.g., age, sex, diseases, characteristics of the motor or cognitive task). Consequently, there is no single factor primarily determining performance fatigue and perceived fatigue in response to motor or cognitive tasks. Instead, the relative weight of each determinant and their interaction are modulated by several factors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), using different electrode positioning and montages, on physical performance in maximum incremental tests of healthy non-athlete subjects. DESIGN: A double-blinded, crossover, sham-controlled study. METHOD: Fifteen subjects (aged 25.8 ± 5 years, nine women) received one of five different tDCS protocols: (i) anodal tDCS on the primary motor cortex (M1) (a-tDCS/M1), (ii) anodal tDCS on the left temporal cortex (T3) (a-tDCS/T3), (iii) cathodal tDCS on M1 (c-tDCS/M1), (iv) cathodal on T3 (c-tDCS/T3), or (v) sham tDCS. The protocols were assigned in a random order in separate sessions. After tDCS, the volunteers performed the maximal incremental exercise test (MIT) on a cycle ergometer in each session. The following measures were used to evaluate physical performance (primary outcome) during MIT: time to exhaustion (TE), maximum power (MAX-P), and Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale. In addition, as a secondary outcome measure, we assessed the lower-limb corticospinal excitability and electrical muscular activity. RESULTS: tDCS applied over T3 or M1 did not influence electrical muscular activity or increase physical performance during MIT in healthy non-athlete subjects. However, our data confirmed that a-tDCS on the M1 increases lower-limb cortical excitability. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that tDCS is not effective in improving performance during maximal dynamic exercise in non-athletes. However, we confirmed that the a-tDCS M1 protocol used in this study might increase cortical excitability in the lower limb motor cortex.

RESUMO O planejamento urbano é um processo que compreende sucessivas melhorias voltadas para a qualidade de vida das populações e o envelhecimento populacional pressiona para que instâncias sociais assumam novas posturas sobre os modos de se planejar a cidade. Para compreender a ligação do idoso com o ambiente, é necessário entender os recursos disponíveis no local e as experiências vividas naquele contexto. A partir do sentido de lugar, as pessoas transformam os espaços e são por eles transformados. Assim, esse estudo questionou como moradores idosos de três localidades da cidade de Brasília constroem seu sentido de lugar, a partir da identificação de facilitadores e barreiras enfrentadas diariamente e das demandas para a construção de um ambiente amigável ao envelhecimento. Os dados qualitativos apresentados decorrem do uso de três técnicas de pesquisa: entrevistas face a face, entrevistas caminhadas e diários fotográficos. Fizeram parte do estudo 63 participantes com idade entre 60 e 90 anos. A análise realizada por meio do software Iramuteq permitiu a elaboração de quatro classes relacionadas aos vínculos sociais e comunitários, às atividades das rotinas diárias, aos aspectos simbólicos que refletem o sentido de lugar e a relação com elementos rurais e urbanos percebidos em cada cenário. Estar atento às mudanças resultantes dessa inversão da pirâmide demográfica incide sobre algumas das questões identificadas nesse estudo, mas também confirma o quanto ainda se faz necessário avançar para incluir de modo mais realista a dinâmica relação idoso-ambiente em estudos que abordam o processo de envelhecimento.

Para comprender la percepción del ambiente por parte de los adultos mayores, es necesario comprender los recursos disponibles en el lugar y también las experiencias vividas en ese contexto. Desde el sentido del lugar, las personas transforman espacios y son transformados por ellos. Por lo tanto, este estudio cuestionó cómo los residentes mayores de tres localidades de la ciudad de Brasilia construyen su sentido de lugar, en función de sus identificaciones de los facilitadores y las barreras que se enfrentan a diario y las demandas para construir un ambiente amigable con el envejecimiento. Los datos cualitativos presentados derivan del uso de tres técnicas de investigación: entrevistas personales, entrevistas complementarias y diarios fotográficos. 63 personas mayores entre 60 y 90 años participaron en el estudio. El análisis realizado con el software Iramuteq permitió el desarrollo de cuatro clases relacionadas con los vínculos sociales y comunitarios, actividades de la rutina diaria, aspectos simbólicos que reflejan el sentido del lugar y la relación con los elementos rurales y urbanos percibidos en cada escenario. Conocer los cambios resultantes de esta inversión de la pirámide demográfica se centra en algunos de los problemas identificados en este estudio, pero también confirma cuánto progreso aún se necesita para incluir de manera más dinámica la relación entre el anciano y el ambiente en los estudios que abordan el envejecimiento.


ABSTRACT. The urban planning is a process that comprises successive improvements aimed at the quality of life of populations and the aging of the population puts pressure on social instances to assume new postures about the ways of planning this environment. To understand the elderly's attachment with the environment, it is necessary to understand the resources available in the place and the experiences lived in that context. From the sense of place, people transform spaces and are transformed by them. Thus, this study questioned how elderly residents of three locations in the city of Brasília build their sense of place, based on their identification of facilitators and barriers faced daily and the demands for building an aging-friendly environment. The qualitative data presented derives from the use of three research techniques: face-to-face interviews, go-along interviews, and photographic diaries. Sixty-three elderly persons between 60 and 90 years participated in the study. The analysis carried out using the Iramuteq software allowed the development of four classes related to social and community bonds, activities of daily routines, symbolic aspects that reflect the sense of place and the relationship with rural and urban elements perceived in each scenario. Being aware of the changes resulting from the demographic pyramid's inversion incur on some of the issues identified in this study. However, the results confirm how much further progress is still needed to include more dynamically the elderly-environment relationship in studies that address the aging process.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to compare the mean propulsive velocity (MPV), maximum power (PMAX), heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) during the parallel squat using elastic bands (EB) or weight plates (WP) to load the bar. The effect of relative strength on the dependent variables was analysed. Additionally, the potential of the RPE to predict external load parameters was assessed. Eighteen trained volunteers squatted at 40%, 55%, 70%, and 85% of their one-repetition maximum with EB and WP (a total of eight sets) in random order. Dependent variables were measured at the first and last repetition (i.e., 10% velocity loss). Two identical sessions were conducted to assess the reliability of measurements. Compared to WP, EB allowed a significantly greater number of repetitions, MPV, and PMAX, and significantly lower RPE. The RPE of the first repetition was a significant predictor of the external load of the set. The RPE showed good repeatability and was not influenced by the relative strength of athletes. In conclusion, compared to WP, the use of EB allows for greater external load with reduced internal load responses in a wide spectrum of load-based intensities. The potential implications of these novel findings are discussed in the manuscript.
